Adventure-Inspired Art Show Acts Locally & Engages Globally

SUMMARY
A new body of artwork on display at Nepalese-founded & operated Zumi’s Espresso in Ipswich, MA offers a visual representation of the inspiration Cape Ann native Joanna Elizabeth Read has gained over her last six years of becoming an outdoor adventure athlete and guide.

The show features stunning landscapes of mountains she has climbed from Spain to Nepal, as well as complementing imagery of local birds, further emphasizing the sense of expansiveness and big picture perspective that keeps drawing her back to the mountains.

30% of all art sales will be donated to youth resiliency & mindfulness programs both locally and globally.

Why: 30% of all art sales will be donated to support youth mindfulness and resiliency programs both locally, in the artist’s current hometown of Providence, RI, and globally, in both rural & urban Nepal. Since Zumi’s is owned and operated by a Nepalese family, and the artist shares connections in Nepal through her trekking and outreach teaching adventures, the giveback is a natural fit.

STORY

Beginning her outdoor adventures in 2014 in the White Mountains, Read has since traveled to 26 national parks and has solo backpacked in mountain ranges all over the world. In 2016, she self-funded an expedition to Denali National Park by selling postcard-sized paintings of the Alaskan landscape.

This new body of artwork is the artist’s attempt at capturing the deeply spiritual connection she has come to know through the wilderness over the last six years.
"I'm making it my mission to take the tools that have helped me navigate intensive life changes over the last decade, namely, movement, mindfulness, community, creativity, and connection with nature, and share these tools and experiences with others in ways that feel empowering, accessible, and purposeful.”

Inspired to share her passion for outdoor adventure in every way that she can, Read now leads women’s beginner rock climbing clinics and also offers hiking expeditions for people who are brand new to outdoor adventure.

30% of all art sales will be donated to support mindfulness and resiliency programs both locally, through Shri Yoga in Pawtucket, RI, an organization with whom she teaches outreach yoga, and globally - the LRI School in Kathmandu, and the Gomilla Secondary School in the Lukla Valley of Nepal. Jo visited and taught at these two schools during her time co-leading a trek to Everest Base Camp with Driftwood Adventures in Spring 2018.
ABOUT
Read grew up in Essex, MA on Bothways Farm and moved to Rockport when she was 14, living with her family behind the gas station at the Cape Ann Veterinary Clinic. She attended Umass Amherst on the Chancellor’s Tuition scholarship for art, thanks in part to a major art scholarship she received from Katherine Bradford upon graduating from Hamilton Wenham Regional High School. She began working at the Rockport Art Association while she was still attending university, and moved to Providence, RI after graduation in 2008.

In addition to teaching, coaching, leading adventure retreats and workshops, managing a co-working space in Pawtuxet Village, RI, and working as a professional artist & muralist, Read also offers public speaking and trainings on resilience and mindfulness, presenting in schools and corporations across New England.
